Ian Johnson has a new running back to compete with in his quest to earn a roster spot with Minnesota.

On Wednesday, the Vikings picked up former Florida State star Antone Smith after releasing WR Aundrae Allison.

The rookie Smith had a brief stint with Detroit earlier this offseason, but was let go before signing with the Vikings.

Smith, known for his blazing speed, brings a different set of skills to the table than the bigger Johnson.

That said, Smith is the sixth running back on a team that might carry only three. How the stable of backs perform in the preseason, especially on special teams, could determine who Minnesota decides to keep.
