Here is a look at the other On The Fringe players in action during this weekend’s preseason games …

Coy Wire will continue to make his case to make the Atlanta Falcons’ final roster when the San Diego Chargers visit the Georgia Dome on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET. A high-definition replay of the game can be seen on NFL Network on Monday at 7 a.m. ET.

The Giants take on the team they share a stadium with, the Jets, on Saturday. However, David Tyree is not expected to play due to a hamstring injury. Tyree has yet to register a reception this preseason, with his last catch coming on that unforgettable play in Super Bowl XLII.

Ian Johnson‘s quest to make the Minnesota Vikings’ final roster hits prime-time TV, when his team takes on the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. A replay of the game can be seen on NFL Network on Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET. Johnson has gotten a good look through two preseason games, rushing 15 times for 59 yards, while catching three passes for 33 yards.

Boldin injury opens door for backups

Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin suffered a hamstring injury during Tuesday’s practice, missed Wednesday workouts and probably will not play when the Cardinals host the Green Bay Packers in Friday’s preseason game at University of Phoenix Stadium.

That means more playing time for Lance Long, as well as the other receivers battling for the precious few roster spots available in a crowded field of Cardinals receivers. Jerheme Urban will start opposite Larry Fitzgerald, while Long, Early Doucet, Sean Morey and Onrea Jones will get more opportunities to showcase their skills on the field.

Boldin suffered a strained right hamstring in practice. He also had a left hamstring injury in the Cardinals’ improbable playoff run last year, suffering the injury on a long touchdown score in a wild-card playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons. He also missed the Cardinals’ divisional playoff victory over the Carolina Panthers before returning to the field for the NFC Championship. Full story …

Receiving praise, but roster spot?

Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com takes a look at the Cardinals’ heated competition at the receiver position, where a handful of pass catchers are vying for just a couple roster spots.

But the impressive training camp of the Cardinals’ wide receiver unit makes it hard for the players involved, too. Jobs are on the line, and while many of the wideouts are showing they deserve an NFL opportunity, there are only so many opportunities available in the Cards’ high-flying offense. For every play one receiver makes, another receiver seems to follow up.

“I try to block it out,” Lance Long said. “But it’s hard not to notice.”

Long is practice-squad eligible, but would likely have a hard time passing through waivers if released by the Cardinals. Full story …

Long makes heads-up play in Cards’ loss

Cardinals WR Lance Long made a heady play that attracted the notice of coaches during a preseason home game against the Chargers.

Long stripped the ball from Clinton Hart after the Chargers’ defensive back made an interception late in the second quarter. Long managed to recover the fumble, but referee Ed Hochuli ruled that the receiver’s foot was out of bounds when he did it.

Still, the effort was there for Long, who finished the game with three receptions for 41 yards.

The 53-man roster quests of Ian Johnson and Coy Wire will continue when the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons, respectively, return to preseason action on Friday.

Johnson, fresh off a stellar 50-yard performance (Highlights) against the Indianapolis Colts in the Vikings’ preseason opener, will aim to contribute in what promises to be a big night at the H.H.H. Metrodome on Friday. The Vikings host the Kansas City Chiefs in what figures to be Brett Favre‘s debut with the local team.

Kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET, and the game can be seen in a re-air on NFL Network at 11 p.m. ET on Friday.

Wire returns to the field on Friday night as well, as the Falcons visit St. Louis to take on the Rams. Game time is 8 p.m. ET, and a replay of the game can be seen on NFL Network at 2 a.m. ET on Saturday.

Wire made his presence felt with three total tackles (Highlights) in the Falcons’ preseason-opening 27-26 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Still looking for his first reception since making arguably the greatest catch in Super Bowl history, David Tyree returns to action when the Giants visit Soldier Field to play the Bears on Saturday. Game time is 8 p.m. ET, but a replay of the game can be seen on NFL Network at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Attempting to separate himself in a crowded situation at receiver for the Cardinals, Lance Long returns to action against the Chargers at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday (NFL Network replay of the game will air at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday). Long’s quest to make the Cardinals’ final roster got off to a solid start last week against the Steelers, as the second-year receiver caught five passes for 48 yards (Highlights).

Tough roster decisions lie ahead

The Arizona Cardinals are well aware of the tough roster decision that lies ahead at the wide receiver position, including the fate of Lance Long.

Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic breaks down the position:

Barring injuries, coaches will have to make some difficult choices at receiver when final cuts are made the week before the season starts. The top four spots seem set, with (Larry) Fitzgerald, (Anquan) Boldin, Steve Breaston and Jerheme Urban. Sean Morey, a special-teams Pro Bowler, is in the mix, and Lance Long and Jones have had solid camps.

“It seems like all those guys, as a group, have performed well,” coach Ken Whisenhunt told The Republic. “There are tough choices everywhere on this roster, and that to me is an indication that we’ve made progress as a team.” Full story …
